21 Days of Fasting & Prayer Devotional – Day 8: The Will Of God

Have you ever found yourself driving through a place that you weren’t familiar with? Attempting to get to your destination on time, you most likely were using GPS to guide you through the roads and places you had never been before. This map told you exactly where to go, precisely when to turn and gave the specific time you could expect to arrive at your destination.

Many Christians today think that the will of God is like a GPS –– and while it would be nice if God directed us in this way, this is not how God works in our lives to reveal his will and plans for us. If God showed you everything that he had planned for you, there would be no need for faith and we may not obey if he did.

But just because God doesn’t show us everything doesn’t mean that God isn’t actively working in our lives and preparing before us his plans for us.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

“For
I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

God’s plans for us are for our good and for his glory. These plans for us are not a mystery (although they may be unknown at times) but we can know God’s will for our lives.

“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 5:10 (NIV)

Every believer has the opportunity and the responsibility to learn what God desires for our lives and to walk in obedience according to his Word and what he’s spoken to us.

This is why times of prayer and fasting are so important because God is speaking – if we will only lower the volume of the things that take up our time, attention, focus, resources and affections – the voice of God becomes easier to hear. His plans become more clear each day. Our faith in him becomes stronger and we begin to walk according to his will.

PRAYER PROMPT:
Today as you pray and fast, silence the noise around you that may distract from hearing God’s voice. Know that he does have a plan for you and that plan can be known. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you and reveal to you God’s plan for your life – that he may be glorified through your obedience and faith.
