DAY 9: COMMUNITY
The Gift of Community
The word community, often translated in the Bible as “fellowship,” carries a profound meaning. In our context, community (or fellowship) is a powerful bond with others who share a common belief, values, and/or mission, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.
However, what’s amazing and unique about the church is that you can join and be a part of the community before you share those beliefs, values, and mission.
This sets the church apart from the rest of the world, which says you must meet certain expectations to be accepted. In these settings, you often must adopt their way before you’re allowed in–but this isn’t the example we see from Jesus or how He designed His church.
Now, we don’t change our beliefs, values, and mission for others; instead, we invite them to the same invitation that Jesus gave: “Follow me.” They’re not following us, but they’re seeing how we live out Jesus's message, listening to what we say, and watching the way we treat one another (John 13:35).
So the community of the church is a gift––one we should pray for and thank God for.
Day 9 Devotion
Scripture: Acts 2:42-47 (NLT)
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[a]), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[b]— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
