21 Days of Fasting & Prayer Devotional – Day 2: Seek First The Kingdom

During these 21 days of prayer and fasting, God is going to speak to you and one of the ways God speaks is through His revealed Word. While there are no doubt mysteries of God that have yet to be shown, there are clear calls and promises that He makes. These calls to action don’t require great theological insight or education in order to follow, but rather a trust and obedience in the Word that God has spoken.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

In the context of Jesus’ sermon, He is calling on His people not to concern themselves with earthly things such as material possessions, money, food, and clothing but to instead seek the Kingdom of God first. The promise made here is that if we put the things of God first and live according to His Word, then He will provide all the things that we need.

We could say it simply like this: If we will be about God’s business, then He will take care of our business.

It’s easy to overlook or overthink the statement Jesus makes here but these are more than just words on a page. These words are a promise God makes to us –– and God always fulfills His promises.

The goal is not to do things for God that we might get something from Him, but instead, it’s to focus our efforts on what matters in the Kingdom of God and in eternity. When we do this, the worries of this world God promises to provide for us –– and likely, He’ll do more than we ask, think or imagine (Ephesians 3:20)

PRAYER PROMPT:
Today as you pray and fast, write out anything you find yourself worried/concerned about and write out any areas where you haven’t been living according to God’s Word. Ask that God would help you to release these over to Him that you may put the Kingdom of God first in your life and watch Him prove His Word.
