Day Eight: Serving

SERVING ONE ANOTHER

One of the things that set Jesus’ teachings apart from others was His continual call on His followers to be servants to each other and in the Kingdom of God.

And [Jesus] sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Mark 9:35 (ESV)

What we think of when we hear the word “servant” differs from how the people in Jesus’ day would have understood the role. Servants were often not voluntary occupations paid a living wage, but instead were considered the lowest of society (often children who were orphaned) and given tasks that were lowly, like washing someone else’s feet.

At Rock City, one of our values is that “Serving is our Honor.” Giving our time, gifts, and resources into the lives of others not as something we have to do but as something we get to be part of.

Ultimately, we show the world and look most like Jesus whenever we serve. It’s not always the big events and grand gestures that make the most impact (though they can), but often, small acts of kindness that go unseen create opportunities for people to encounter Jesus and hear the good news.

DAY EIGHT DEVOTIONAL

Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-6

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.

The Household of Faith

This would be a great time to thank God and personally recognize others for the way they serve our church. As a church, we are grateful for those who have given of their time, treasure, and talents to make Rock City Church possible and believe in faith together for the work God is doing!

Hear From God

Pull out a journal or your notes app, and take a few minutes to reflect on these verses.

Highlight –– Write down part of the Scripture that stood out to you

Explain –– Answer the question, “What is the Bible teaching?” Ask the Holy Spirit for insight, and use the resources below to help.

Apply –– How can you apply this in real life?

Respond –– Use what you’ve learned to pray, write out a next step, or consider who you can share this with.

PRAY

Today, as you pray and fast, would you add these three things to your prayer time?

  • Thank God for the opportunities to demonstrate His love through acts of service

  • Forgive me when I’ve overlooked chances to serve, caught up in my own needs and desires

  • Open my eyes to the needs of those around me

  • Prepare my heart to respond with kindness and generosity so that others may know Jesus
